3 Ways To Jumpstart Your Coaching Business

So you’re thinking “how do I jumpstart my coaching business?”

From my experience working with coaching and consultants, there’s really only a few reasons you’re asking this question:

  • You're just launching your coaching business and you want your first paying clients
  • You're re-launching a new product or service and/or you want to ramp up your business
  • You're in a slump and you need to pick up some new clients. AKA: you want to get out of the "feast or famine" business model and find a better way to get consistent leads and new clients

Well, after exploring literally hundreds of ways to get new clients for my own coaching business and for hundreds of my clients, there’s 3 very fast ways to jumpstart your coaching business.

Referrals, Referrals, Referrals

Businesswomen shaking hands

Let’s just get this one out of the way now. Referrals are the absolute fastest and easiest way to get new clients whether you’re just starting your coaching business or you’re well experience and have billed thousands in coaching to date.

Referrals are not new and I realize they are not “sexy” in yours or my eyes. But they are simply one of the best things you can do to get clients RIGHT NOW… and consistently in the future.

Here’s Why:

  1. Friends and Family can refer you immediately to someone they know
  2. Current clients (if you have them) can refer you immediately
  3. It costs you NOTHING to get these clients
  4. The sales closing ratio from a good referral can be as high as 90%+
  5. … and I’m sure there’s a dozen other reasons I could list here

Here’s what I suggest:

Create a system on paper or whiteboard of how you will strategically ask for referrals at the right time from the right people who are most likely to give you GREAT referrals.

Ideally once you get your first client you should have a system in place that’s almost 100% automated to request, collect, and reach out to referrals from your happy clients.

We have an automated campaign we build for clients that does all of that 100% hands off. But to the client that gives the referral and the referral themselves, it feels like it’s 100% real and live from you. Then when the referral responds and ask to chat with you, you or your team get notified automatically and reach out to them. Easy peasy.

Local Networking Events

The second thing I would do to jumpstart your coaching business is start becoming a Networking Nazi! It’s just easy to get clients as referrals are and it rarely costs you any more than $50 per month and many times it’s just flat out free to attend great networking events.

Here’s Why:

  1. Others are their for the same reason you are, so you’re perfectly welcome to meet and greet
  2. Meeting people in person establishes trust faster than anything I know
  3. You can immediately see if it’s a great marketing activity or to move on – no wasting time
  4. You can get awesome referrals from the people you meet, so you end up expanding your network beyond just the people in the room
  5. Others are there often seeking for a solution, not just to sell you something. You could very well be the solution they are seeking.

Let me give you an example of how my wife starting her coaching business from scratch. And I mean ZERO paying clients — to women currently begging to be coached by her and willing to pay thousands of dollars.

I want to be clear here:  She now has a $350,000+ per year body transformation business only after 3 years and what I'm about to share with you is EXACTLY how she got started with her first clients.

When my wife was first starting out as a nutrition and fitness coach, the first thing she did was go meet at least 50-100 new people within 2-3 weeks. I was blown away how fast she got clients. Because all she did just went to networking events in our local area and let people know who she is and what value she has to offer.

Her clients are women, usually have children, are already into fitness and nutrition but want to step up their game in their body and how to look. Essentially, they want to increase their confidence and feel amazing about themselves and in their intimate relationship.

So what networking events do you think she went to?

The local BNI? Hell no! (Big mistake is waste time going to the wrong networking events for your ideal audience)

She went to CrossFit meet-ups, she attended a local networking group only for female entrepreneurs (do you think driven business women also care about their body? yep.), and she found 3 or 4 events per week that were announced on the local gym bulletin boards. She even got invited to teach a fitness class and speak about nutrition after meeting someone the first day at one of these events.

After doing this networking activity, she picked up her first 5 clients within 3 weeks and she didn’t even have a business name, website, business card, or any real solidified “program” yet. She just had her personality, her drive, and her ability to networking and be a real person.

TIP: She wasn’t selling at these events, she was simply rubbing shoulders and asking attendees how she could help them in their business or in their goals. They would appreciate the question and reciprocate.

When they asked “How can I help you?”… my wife would simply say:

“Thanks for asking, I’m really looking for just a handful of women who really want to transform their body and feel sexy and amazing… what women do you know that is looking for a total body transformation?”

Most people would not say any names at all. That’s not the point of the question. The point is to open up the folder in their mind that is very specific — women who want a body transformation.

The response is usually something like: “I’m not sure right now but If I think of someone, I’ll let you know”.

She would then respond: “Thanks so much, when you do think of someone please let them I only work with women are are dead serious about a major body transformation and I start by giving them a free body transformation strategy call – that way I can find out if they are a good fit for what I offer”

She would text the person her contact information and a reminder note of how they met and repeat pretty much the same thing in her text (or email):

“Great to meet you at [networking event name here], I hope I can help you with anything you need in your [business/life/body].  As a reminder, when you do think of someone who might need my help, please let them know I only work with women are are dead serious about a major body transformation and I start by giving them a free body transformation strategy call with a step by step plan – that way I can find out if they are a good fit for what I offer and they can see if they like the unique approach I take. I’m Looking forward to helping you too – please let me know specifically how I can help”

Sure enough, within that week she would get a text back from about a third of these people saying one of two things:

“I thought about what you said, and I have a sister/mother/cousin/friend who could really use your help. Here’s their contact information.”
“I thought about what you said, and I personally could really use your help. How do I get started?”

Not bad right?  Start networking in your local area and you’ll have new clients in just days.

Build a New “Lead Magnet”

Okay, so I’m going to go total “marketing nerd” on you here but this is a powerful one.

First of all, if you don’t know what a “Lead Magnet” is. Then realize that you’re going to need to start studying marketing 101 like… RIGHT NOW.

  • FREE piece of value that you offer to attract (hence the term “magnet) potential leads/prospects in exchange for a name and/or email.
  • The lead magnet should help them quickly solve a problem on their mind, whether it’s a big or small problem.
  • It needs to be something that’s extremely short and easy to consume in 3-5 minutes maximum.
  • You’ve probably seen free reports, quizzes, cheat sheets, checklist, contests, etc. These are all examples of free lead magnets.
  • They are given away for free in hopes to gather a name and email so marketers can follow up and eventually build a relationship of trust and get a new client.

Here’s why lead magnets are so powerful:

  • A great lead magnet done right establishes quite a bit of good will and value in the prospects mind.
  • The prospect subconsciously and many times very consciously establishes you as a go-to expert for the topic and problem they are seeking to solve. In other words, they begin trusting you and your advice.
  • This sets them up easily to trust the next steps you ask them to do
  • Because you’ve asked for an email you can follow up with another tip of value that takes them down the path of eventually wanted to talk with you.
  • As long as you bring great value in your blog posts, social media posts, and emails you send out to them regularly, they may eventually ask for your paid help.
  • Lead magnets essentially help you easily and automatically build a list of prospects who you can market to. If you don’t have a lead magnet, get one build now and put it on a landing page.
